At the onset of the current century, a team of over 150 researchers co-ordinated by Barbara Cassin undertook the task of compiling a dictionary of terms, drawn from a multitude of European languages, which were deemed to be ‘untranslatable’. While nominally focused on philosophy (e.g. Greek lógos), it far exceeded its scope with entries such as the German Neuzeit, Russian mir, or Portuguese ficar. In a modest echo of their undertaking, this series will collect instances we have encountered in our daily work that might be candidates for a legal subset of the Dictionary’s universe.
