In February this year, ZB Importing LLC, a USA importer, voluntarily issued a recall for six varieties of snack rolls, biscuits, and wafers manufactured by Ulker, a Turkish multinational. The recalled products had been distributed in 36 US states, as well as in Ontario province in Canada. 

The reason was undeclared allergens in the label: specifically, wheat, eggs, and milk had been left out of the ingredient list as translated into English. This led to an allergic reaction among some customers – in some cases, a potentially lethal one due to anaphylaxis.

The mistake was found to have occurred in the translation from Turkish into English. While the exact cause has not been disclosed, it is worth mentioning that the omission of terms from the original text is one of the characteristic, and identifying, flaws of machine translation. 

In any case, this incident highlights the importance of human oversight and thorough quality assessment in translations – particularly those with such a potentially high human and financial cost.
