On September 30th, the global translation community comes together to honor International Translation Day, and through it, a tradition as ancient as writing itself. Although the day commemorates the feast of St. Jerome, the patron saint of translators, at Boethius Translations, International Translation Day also resonates with the legacy of Severinus Boethius, whose works remind us that translation stands at the heart of  intellectual exchange and civilization itself.

Indeed, Boethius’s legacy is a testament to the enduring power of translation as a cultural bridge: in translating and interpreting Greek philosophy and logic into Latin, Boethius equipped medieval Europe with the very foundations of its intellectual life, ensuring that the wisdom of Plato, Aristotle, and the classical world would not be lost but instead woven into the fabric of Western – and world – thought. 

For us, translation is a meticulous, collaborative craft rooted in heritage and integrity. Like the monastic scribes and illuminators of yore, our workflow is built on careful specialization. Each project moves through a multi-stage process—analysis, expert translation, technical review, and final publication—so that nothing is lost in translation except uncertainty. 

Professional translation in 2025 has evolved greatly since the days of Boethius and St Jerome. AI and LLM technologies, in particular, are changing the translation landscape in ways that would have been unimaginable only five years ago. But professional translation remains as necessary as ever, if not more so. 

In an era where artificial intelligence and machine translation tools offer instant, apparently cost-free solutions across hundreds of languages, the need for the expertise of human translators has paradoxically become critical. While AI translation has revolutionized accessibility and speed, it has simultaneously introduced significant risks that make professional oversight indispensable for any content with meaningful consequences. In particular, professional translators remain essential for high-stakes communication where confidence, accuracy, and fluency are indispensable, such as the legal, medical, and technical domains.

This does not mean that translators are becoming entrenched in obsolete positions: rather, as we have always done in the long history of our profession, we are embracing new technologies and adapting them to improve our work, through the use of hybrid models that place human expertise and know-how at the center.
