Our company’s name is an homage to the Roman philosopher-translator Severinus Boethius, whose generation helped establish translation as a craft, and effectively incorporated it into the lore of Western Civilization.

Boethius’ generation started the golden age of translation. Taking a foothold on this framework, laid out during Late Antiquity, translation went on to flourish as a Medieval trade. Despite common portrayals, it was far from a solitary endeavor. Rather, it was embedded in the craft of codex writing, which involved engravers, illuminators, copyists, and binders, among other craftsmen. The preservation of much of the cultural wealth of mankind is owed to the bustling, yet patient workshops of the monastic – and later secular – scriptoria.

Just like a Medieval codex, a translated document in the XXI Century is the result of a sum of separate artisanal efforts, which range from the preliminary visual and technical analysis of the source material, to the translation proper, followed by multiple stages of review by separate parties. This involves, among others, tasks such as the data entry of technical information, and desktop publishing to ensure a matching layout.
