October 30, 2026 is International Translators’ Day, marking the feast day of Saint Jerome, the patron saint of translators. This year’s theme, chosen by the International Federation of Translators and UNESCO, is “Linguistic Diversity and Language Rights: The Power of Being Understood”, highlighting how translation, interpretation, and terminology foster inclusion, equity, and participation in an interconnected world.

This theme has particular relevance for legal firms and global businesses. For the purpose of translation, interpreting, and terminology management is to facilitate communication, but also to ensure clarity, participation, and trust. 

A contract is only effective when its terms can be understood by all parties. A workplace policy only protects people when employees and stakeholders can access and act on it. A legal proceeding is only fair when those involved can fully comprehend the information, issues, and decisions that affect them.

This International Translation Day, we celebrate the work of translators, interpreters, and terminologists for their key role helping organizations communicate responsibly and well, thus ensuring that being understood is never left to chance.
